Commonwealth-EU Co-operation For African DevelopmentProject Officer:
Richard Bourne Page last updated: May 15, 2006 Introduction The Commonwealth Policy Studies Unit (CPSU) ran a programme in 2005 to look at the nature of the resources which the Commonwealth and European Union can provide for the NEPAD process, how far they are complementary, and how they may be better coordinated with the African Union ( AU ). The two organisations have different attributes and resources, but over the last two years there has been increasing collaboration in training for trade negotiation, deepening democracy, assistance for small island states, and capacity building for developing countries. The project produced a report with recommendations to the Commonwealth summit in Valletta (25-27 November). It stimulated three expert conferences as part of this programme, at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies on 23 May, at the European Policy Centre, Brussels on 12 July (in conjunction with the EPC), and at the University of Malta on 17 October (in conjunction with Professor Lino Briguglio).
