Leo Zeilig will begin his post as Assistant Director for the CPSU from 2nd August 2010 and has published widely on African politics and history. His books include Revolt and Protest: Student Politics and Activism in Sub-Saharan Africa (London: I. B. Tauris, 2008) and Africa’s Lost Leader: Patrice Lumumba (London: Haus, 2008).  Leo has written extensively on movements for democratic change and political transitions in sub-Saharan Africa. He is a visiting research associate at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

Leo has also worked as an independent journalist and during the presidential elections in Zimbabwe in 2002 he coordinated the Independent Media Centre. He has worked as a lecturer at Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal, and as a lecturer and researcher at Brunel University, London; the Centre for Sociological Research at the University of Johannesburg and as a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Dr.Veronica Broomes

Dr Broomes leads on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of transnational businesses and the linkage with government policies on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and national economic development. Her career spans agricultural research, lecturing on Climate Change and biodiversity and consultancies on Sustainable Development and Environmental and Social Impact assessments for international and national organisations. An alumni of the University of Sheffield, Veronica has a PhD in Plant Science.   

Emmanuel Nuesiri

Emmanuel Nuesiri is a Research Associate with CPSU and Clarendon Scholar/ Doctoral Candidate at the School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE).  His expertise is in global forest governance, climate change and local livelihoods in tropical forest regions.  He has an MPhil in Environment and Development from Cambridge University and 12 years experience in forest conservation.  He has conducted consultancy research for Fauna and Flora International (FFI) England and the DFID-funded Cameroon Mountains Conservation Foundation (CAMCOF).  he most recently convened a workshop on 'on Carbon finance and pro-poor forestry in the Commonwealth'.

Chris Parsons

Chris Parsons is a doctorial candidate at the University of Nottingham and is specializing in migration and labour flows. Chris's research interests also include poverty, inequality and the changing patterns of aid flows.  He holds a BSc in Economics from Cardiff (University of Wales), and an MSc in Economics and Economic Development at Nottingham University. He has worked for the World Bank as a consultant for over 3 years.

Prof Mushtaq Mirani 

Prof. Mirani is the director of  Mehran University Centre for Energy & Development. He is development specialist and engineer, specializing in sustainable development,  energy  development, institutional development, and poverty reduction. He has a masters degree in economics from the University of Sindh and electrical engineering from Polytechnic Institute, Bucharest. He was a visiting research fellow at the London School of Economics, University of Leeds and Institute of Commonwealth studies.  He  has published articles and reports on electrical power, rural development and poverty alleviation. He was a member of the  Prime minister’s Taskforce on Poverty Alleviation in Pakistan and is regularly invited  for television policy debates.

Malaika Mikaelsson is the Research Associate leading CPSU’s Local Democracy in the Commonwealth project. She worked with CPSU in 2004 and conducted an audit of local democracy in the Commonwealth. Following the Commonwealth Local Government Conference held in Aberdeen in 2005, the Aberdeen Agenda was developed as a toolkit to promote healthy local democracy and good governance. Using the Aberdeen Agenda as a contextual framework, she is conducting a follow up review of the state of local democracy and governance. Malaika brings her expertise in policy research, local and participatory democracy and advocacy to the role. That expertise is complemented by her Master’s in International Relations with a focus on International Development Studies from the Universiteit van Amsterdam, Holland.

Robert Hopper is a Research Associate at the CPSU specialising in international trade and aid.  Robert has produced work for the UK Department for International Development and is currently co-authoring an inquiry into aid effectiveness for a British All Party Parliamentary Group.  Before joining CPSU, Robert worked on international development issues for the UK Parliamentary Group for Debt, Aid and Trade and for Baroness Northover, the Liberal Democrats spokesperson for International Development in the House of Lords.  Robert holds degrees in Economics and Public Policy, where he focused his research on the economic development and politics of low income and divided societies.

Homera Cheema has worked with the CPSU since January 2007.   Currently she is co-ordinator for the Commonwealth Fisheries Programme and has organised and assisted in three international study tours.  Prior to this Homera worked as an intern at the Young Foundation in Bethnal Green.  She holds a BA in History and Politics from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS, University of London) and is currently studying an MA in International Studies and Diplomacy also at SOAS.
