Fisheries Programme Update

05/02/10 11:29

The Commonwealth Fisheries Programme, a two year project looking at small-scale fisheries and coastal livelihoods in Commonwealth countries, will be ending its first phase this March.  The programme which undertook a series of case studies, study tours and regional consultations synthesised its findings in the book-report 'From Hook to Plate'.  The book contains recommendations for better management of fisheries calling Commonwealth member-states to action, as well as chapter contributions from Commonwealth fisheries experts.

Last November, at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Trinidad, the CFP was successful in getting a reference to sustainable fisheries in the CHOGM communiqué.  The Programme also raised awareness of fisheries in the Commonwealth at the Commonwealth Peoples' Space and the Commonwealth Peoples' Forum.  A Review Conference will be held in London this March to build on the success at CHOGM.
